As far as I know, no. If you are working on a double sided object, the only recommendation I can make is to put the blanket into a embroidery ring/hoop and watch your stitches on both sides when darning to try to make them equally as neat as possible.

Alternative solutions could be embroider or applique the hole. This solution is still one-sided, but it would make clear which side is up. Another solution could be to crochet the hole; this would also be decorative, but double sided. See some instructions here:

What do you do to the back side of a darn?

I have an old wool blanket that has some holes in it.... I darned the holes with wool and the effect is lovely.

But the reverse side is till rough: a hole, where I can see the darn from the other side if I make myself clear. Is there some accepted "finihs" for the reverse side of a darn?

Actually, this project was machine sewn. I do prefer hand sewing - it looks nicer and I have better control over the quality, however, in this case it was the right tool for the project.

I don’t know anything about pattern-making (although I have been making some through trial and error for the felt food I’m making). It would cool to learn. Too bad we don’t live in the same city so that we could take a class together.

Sue, you amaze me with your hand-sewing. I want to take pattern-making and I love draping and thinking up ideas. But when it comes to sewing, I get a similar feeling to thinking about ironing. Groan. Thumbs up for the neat edges.
